Importance of GRE

Graduate school admissions place importance on the GRE for multiple reasons. As an initial point, it provides a shared standard for assessing applicants with different educational experiences. The GRE offers a standardized measure of academic aptitude and potential due to variations in educational systems and grading scales across institutions and countries.

The GRE assists graduate schools in evaluating applicants' abilities in critical thinking, analytical writing, quantitative reasoning, and verbal reasoning. Success in graduate-level coursework and research relies on these essential skills.

Moreover, the GRE presents a uniform approach to measure applicants' capability to handle the demands of graduate-level study. Applicants' proficiency in handling coursework, engaging in scholarly discussions, and conducting research is evaluated by admissions committees with this tool.

The GRE holds weight in the graduate school admissions process, but it is just one piece of the puzzle. Admission committees also consider factors like undergraduate GPA, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and relevant work experience.

Sections of the GRE

Each section evaluates distinct  skills and abilities. Let's explore the skills assessed  in each section:

Analytical Writing

Determines the test taker's skill in clearly  and successfully conveying complex thoughts. ‌Measures critical thinking and  analytical writing abilities. Tests the skill to construct and defend an  argument or assess an already established argument.

Verbal Reasoning

It measures the test taker's capability to  comprehend and assess written material.  Measures reading comprehension skills, vocabulary usage, and the  ability to draw conclusions from written passages. Tests the understanding of relationships between  words, concepts, and ideas.

Quantitative Reasoning:

Measures the test taker's capabilities in  mathematical and quantitative reasoning. The evaluation gauges the skill to interpret and analyze quantitative information, solve problems with mathematical concepts, and apply mathematical reasoning to real-life scenarios. This includes fundamental arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

Understanding GRE Scoring

Let's explore the scoring scales for the different sections and how the scores are calculated:

Analytical Writing

  • Score Range: 0-6, in half-point increments.
  • Two separate readers score each essay independently.
  • Averaging the scores from the two readers gives the final score.
  • If the scores given by the two readers differ significantly, a third reader will review the essay and ascertain the ultimate score.

Verbal Reasoning

  • Score Range: 130-170, in 1-point increments.
  • The score is established by counting the number of right answers. Incorrect and skipped questions have no penance.
  • The raw score is transformed into a scaled score through the process of equating.

Quantitative Reasoning

  • Score Range: 130-170, in 1-point increments.
  • The score for the Verbal Reasoning section is determined by the number of correct answers, without any deduction for incorrect or skipped questions.
  • The raw score is converted to a scaled score using the equating process to maintain consistency across different test forms and administrations.
  • In the Analytical Writing section, the score range of 0-6 signifies different levels of writing proficiency. Outstanding analytical writing skills correspond to a score of 6, whereas a score of 0 suggests a response that is irrelevant, disorganized, or lacks substance.
